Probing the Local Velocity Distribution of WIMP Dark Matter with Directional Detectors
نویسندگان
چکیده
We explore the ability of directional nuclear-recoil detectors to constrain the local velocity distribution of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter by performing Bayesian parameter estimation on simulated recoil-event data sets. We discuss in detail how directional information, when combined with measurements of the recoilenergy spectrum, helps break degeneracies in the velocity-distribution parameters. We also consider the possibility that velocity structures such as cold tidal streams or a dark disk may also be present in addition to the Galactic halo. Assuming a CF4 detector with a 30-kg-yr exposure, a 50-GeV WIMP mass, and a WIMP-nucleon spin-dependent cross-section of 10 pb, we show that the properties of a cold tidal stream may be well constrained. However, measurement of the parameters of a dark-disk component with a low lag speed of ∼50 km/s may be challenging unless energy thresholds are improved.

Recoil momentum spectrum in directional dark matter detectors
Directional dark matter detectors will be able to record the recoil momentum spectrum of nuclei hit by dark matter WIMPs. We show that the recoil momentum spectrum is the Radon transform of the WIMP velocity distribution. This allows us to obtain analytic expressions for the recoil spectra of a variety of velocity distributions. We comment on the possibility of inverting the recoil momentum spe...

The DMTPC detector is a low-pressure CF4 TPC with optical readout for directional detection of Dark Matter. The combination of the energy and directional tracking information allows for an efficient suppression of all backgrounds. The choice of gas (CF4) makes this detector particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions. 1. Directional Dark Matter detection The goal of a directional Dark...
متن کاملDetectability of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles in the Sagittarius Dwarf Tidal Stream
Tidal streams of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) may be showering dark matter onto the solar system and contributing ∼(0.3–25)% of the local density of our Galactic Halo. If dark matter consists of WIMPs, the extra contribution from the stream gives rise to a step-like feature in the energy recoil spectrum in direct dark matter detection. For our best estimate of stream velocity (...

The Boulby Dark Matter Collaboration (BDMC) is running several experiments for particle (WIMP) dark matter search in the Underground Boulby Laboratory. These include a liquid xenon detector (ZEPLIN I) and a low pressure gas TPC with directional sensitivity (DRIFT I). Next stage double-phase xenon detectors ZEPLIN II and ZEPLIN III, and a new TPC DRIFT II will be installed at Boulby in a few mon...
متن کاملStudy of capture and annihilation of a few GeV WIMPs inside the Sun by using an underground neutrino detector
Dark matter has an enigmatic invisible existence contributing most of the gravity in the universe. Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are favored as particle candidates for non-baryonic cold dark matter, since their interaction strength can explain the thermal relic abundance of dark matter. Recent event excesses or annual modulation signals reported by direct detection experiments su...
